No? Okay.
Selfie sticks are becoming increasingly popular by the day and it is no wonder, since selfies have been an ongoing global trend. The term “selfies” was awarded the title of being the word of 2013 by Oxford Dictionary. They have somewhat made our lives easier, because gone are the days of crossing your fingers while taking a picture, as the randomly selected guy from the beach holds the much anticipated picture. Putting the power of a still memory in the hands of a stranger who for one doesn’t care whether you come out looking like last week’s left over pancakes or not, unless you are really lucky and the selected individual is in the mood or if you are rather always “camera ready”, then you can save your R199.
To your delight and much to mine, celebrities such as Davido (fhggdgh – speaks in tongues on your behalf), P.Diddy, Carmelo Anthony (Kindly assist me with Cupid’s number, or even Pastor Mboro’s, this one is too much for your local sangoma), Ronaldo, to name a few, were spotted with selfie sticks. It is clear that this trend is a growing one, which other celebrities do you know of who have acquired the stick? Do you own it yet? What are your thoughts in relation to it?
And backtracking to my first question, which I do not aim to deny rhetorical rights, narcissism is evident in a manner of carelessness or rather carefreeness from the individuals who stick out cellphones from their handbags and visibly take high arm pictures, distracted and distracting a group (“centers” of attention?). I have seen a number of those in malls and within my own circles, where a friend would recommend silence over silly pictures, trying to find the perfect one to post on social media, reapplying lipstick and painting a certain look. Our obsession with looks and likes? It’s a bit funny when you look at it from a glass window, because I am guilty of taking multiple selfies too when I have pulled up my girly socks on a day out. And the kind of narcissism I am referring to is the healthy kind, the one that portrays self love (if it doesn’t amount to obsession / addiction) and a postive view of the self image – there’s some confidence boost and a full glass of excitement that comes with it.
Honestly, these high arm pictures have made girls night out more fun, especially for the waitresses who had to take the pictures while they wished they could cross their legs with us. Do you have any selfie stories to share? I know they’ve become inclined to sticking in, there’s always a selfie story, maybe we’ll make better ones with this new invention (even though I am quite skeptical, but I am one of the lucky “likers of things”). I can already picture my friends and I shouting, “to good memories” while we raise our honourable sticks.
