As election fever grips the nation, South Africa’s leading politicians are to come face-to-face with some of their youngest constituents in a special programme from MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130), aimed at motivating young people to engage in the electoral process.  “MTV Base Choose or Lose 2014” will air simultaneously on MTV and MTV Base ahead of the upcoming elections on Sunday 4 May 2014 at 18:00 CAT (repeat: 22:00 CAT, 4 May).

President Jacob Zuma (ANC), DA leader Helen Zille and EFF president Julius Malema will appear in a one-hour TV special where they will be quizzed on why South African youth should vote for them for the coming term of office.

Eight young South African “born frees” (ie born after the first South Africa democratic elections in 1994) will be on hand to put the leaders on the spot and pose questions about a range of issues including education, service delivery, HIV/AIDS, gender issues and other burning issues affecting the youth of today.

Facilitated by MTV Base VJ Sizwe Dhlomo, “MTV Base Choose or Lose 2014” is based on MTV’s global “Choose or Lose” campaign, created in 1982 to inform and empower young voters on the political issues that matter to them most, and to provide a platform for airing their views.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, watch it Sunday 4 May 2014 at 18:00 CAT (repeat: 22:00 CAT, 4 May) on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130).

So the SAMAs took place this past Monday and the event was received with a lot of mixed emotions. I would have loved to go but I had to work on Tuesday so gave them a miss.

The event itself was kinda dry… There was nothing wow about it, I actually don’t remember anything spectacular about the evening… well except for Vusi Nova and Zikhona Sodlaka of course.

They gave us a lot to talk about… and look at.

Them, Boity and Sis R

Oskido accepting his Remix Of The Year award for Tsa Mandebele

Zulu girls at the Industry Awards…

I die for Nandi’s hair. Such a queen this woman! Beautiful!

Lulo Cafe and a lady he called Charlize.

Sis Ribs won Best Traditional Faith Album.

Zakes Bantwini performed. I see he’s been working out…

Kwela Tebza Micasa won Best Dance Album

Zonke won Best African Adult for Ina Ethe

Uhuru doing YTjukutja

Mafikizolo cleaned up! Scooping award after award. A well deserved honour, hell I even voted for them to win Record Of The Year…

After crying like a baby after he lost at the Metro FM Awards, IFani won Best Rap Album … see? Patience baba… patience.

Did you love Zonke’s look?

A lot of people complained about Lootlove’s dress, I actually didn’t mind it. It almost gives me these Rihanna vibes.

Vusi Nova dresses well damn!!!!

Nqubeko Mbatha won Best Contemporary Faith Album for Sentiments of A worshiper

Nakhane Toure taking home his Best Alternative Music award

The Soil… Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album

Pearl hosted the Industry Awards that took place during the day before the main awards.. and I remember telling her I could not wait to see her host the SAMAs. Well, here it is.

Toya De Lazy presenting an award…

Ribs and Judith performing…

Over In Hollywood

How were the SAMA’s for those who watched? As soon as I heard they were horrendous, I started writing this week’s Hollywood catch-up post. I hear (from Somizi’s instagram) that it was a poverty stricken affair, I guess MTN needs to go back and inject some coins or better yet data bundles – LOL!

Anyways over to international news. My fave Brit girl, well one of many, Lily Allen recently performed at a gay club in London and guess who’s cover she did? Beyonce’s Drunk In Love, she literally re-enacted the video, trying on surfboard on a stage with a bucket of water, messy boots.  Lily Allen if you know thrives on controversy and with her new album Sheezus you can tell she revels in it. Of course Sheezus is a play on Kanye’s Yeezus. just waiting for Beyonce to drop Beyzus and I swear after that Jesus will come down and strike down every Bey Hive member not to mention side-chicks who have perfected surfboarding abantu babantu.

George Clooney is engaged. I didn’t see this one coming. What happened to bachelor for life? Well I guess people grow up even old men. Now we wait for Thenius Crous to grow up. Back to George, he popped the big question to his lawyer girlfriend, Amal Alamuddin. Hard name to remember but this girl is unlike most of his ex’s , she is established, does well on her own and isn’t the come-up girl (side-eye that waitress). This engagement comes after Clooney’s ex Stacey Kiebler announcing her marriage and pregnancy just a couple of fortnights back. People move on fast in Hollywierd – imagine being dumped after investing a good 5+ years in a relationship and only for your ex to get hitched the 3 months after your break-up. And it’s usually guys…on that note is that what happened to Thembi Seete and Tshepo Mabona? Gosh I used to love that couple.

So as well all know, Ashton Kutcher is marrying, soon to be baby mama, Mila Kunis this coming month and Demi Moore, Ashton’s ex cougar wife is doing everything in her power to avoid the wedding news. She is doing that by going on a retreat to India, in a remote place without any technology that will taunt her with the news or pictures. Sheesh she should just get over him already. Demi strikes me a little psycho a la Halle Berry. The funny thing is that her daughters with Bruce Willis, Rumer and Tallulah are reportedly attending the wedding and one of them might even read a poem. Some phuckery that. Even if i thought my mum was a little unreasonable and should move on from her ex to attend anything to do with that ex is just plain treacherous. Same thing as your friend hanging out with that ex that you ended on a very bad note with. Like for what?

Gwen Stefani is the new lady to join the coaches over at The Voice, yeah Hollaback girl! I’m happy to see Gwen joining the panel, I’m not as psyched by her as a coach but I am psyched to see what she will be wearing and that quirky cool brand of hers will give us all life. Christina is off on maternity leave and Shakira I guess she will be promoting that goat bellowing album of hers. I love me some Shakira but I can’t listen to more than one song from her. I can’t only stand goats and cats for as long as Bonang and Euphonik break-ups usually are.

Remember I was saying that Columbus Short’s personal ratchetness might jeopardize his job on Scandal? Well it did. Finally it’s been confirmed that Harrison won’t be returning for season 4 of Scandal US. Shame I feel for him but his fights and threatening to kill his wife and all that mess must have made the show’s head honcho’s want to distance themselves from that kind of negative publicity. I always wonder if these celebrities even know what and how brands function? Nonhle did the same and the fall from grace was faster than Oscar’s blades.

I know this is LATE but damn that Naya Rivera and Big Sean break-up had me laughing. Whoever created twitter allowed messiness to prevail. So word is Big Sean was cheating on Naya or she was just plain insecure (cough B*) and when Sean called off the engagement Naya went in with guns blazing on twitter accusing Sean of stealing a Rolex, from her house. I personally think Sean was tired of dating a Kim Kardashian clone. I can’t say I expected better these guys hooked up on twitter so it’s only fair to “unhook” on twitter, hey? Let’s govern our thirst on these social media platforms you never know how psycho those people you are sending DM’s are.

I used to love that Selena Gomez but her flip flopper ways regarding being on and off with Miley’s twin Bieber is beyond me. She is on train-wreck alert. Lindsay Lohan might just have a new partner in crime. Ms. Gomez has been spotted around with Orlando Bloom fueling the rumour that they are hooking up. I am not sure if it’s because she is a Disney kid but I find that prospect nauseating like statutory rape even if she is very legal. Anyway whatever rocks her surfboard.

Oh Rita Ora, i’m still trying to figure out what she does for a living besides attend events, representing brands and be Rihanna’s understudy. Rita got into trouble for breaching her contract with shoe company Superga when she was seen rocking Converse Chuck Tailors. Even if I haven’t read her contract it’s common knowledge that you dont associate yourself with rival brands when you are the face of another brand and getting paid for it. Thanks to her dumb-foolery Rita is being sued. It hasn’t seemed to affect her “career” as she has just inked another deal with fashion mogul Roberto Cavalli. Ja neh, some kids have strong Sangoma’s, le nna I’m going to Venda shem. This made me wonder if our girl B actually uses those Bic razors – wouldn’t it be something finding her at a laser hair removal parlor.

InOtherNews:

  • Jay-Z & Beyonce will be doing On The Run Tour. Kings and Queens getting everyone’s hard earned cash but Blue still got that pop corn hair.

Half Of A Yellow Sun

When I learned last year that Chimamanda Adichie’s book ” Half Of A Yellow Sun”  was finally  going to be made into a film, I got excited and knew it was a film I really wanted to watch. The setting of the book is during the Nigeria – Biafra war. It talks about how we as Africans are united when there is something that affects us as a continent but it also shows how quickly we change when the war is amongst us as Africans. If you into movies like Hotel Rwanda, then you will enjoy the movie when it hits South African cinemas.

I enjoyed reading the book because every character was different from the other. Love is the main theme in the book and it also showed how when you look death in the eyes, your perception of life starts to change and you question all that you do, not by choice but because of circumstances that have aroused.

The internationally renowned actors, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton, play the main roles and I have no doubt do a great job. Also doing an appearance are Genevieve Nnaji, Onyeka Onwenu and others.

BBC reported that Nigeria’s film board has delayed the release of Half of a Yellow Sun, after it was set to open in Nigerian cinemas on Friday. A film board spokesman told AFP there were “regulatory issues” with the film but that it wasn’t “officially banned”. Read more HERE.

More about the author

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie grew up in Nsukka, a university town in south eastern Nigeria, where she and her family lived. Her father was a statistics professor and her mother a registrar at the university.

At 19, she moved to the United States and study communications and political science at both Drexel University and Eastern Connecticut State. Adichie graduated in 2001 and in 2003 received her master’s degree in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University. She went on to pursue a second masters degree, in African Studies, from Yale, which she completed in 2008.

Adichie’s first novel, is Purple Hibiscus was published in 2003 and her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006) is a historical fiction that is set during the Nigerian-Biafran War and tells the story of two sisters during the war.

Hope to see the movie in Mzansi though, have a look at the trailer uploaded on JC.

The Miss SA/ Heat Drama…

In case you’ve been wondering what it’s all about…

After being accused  by Heat Magazine of being the Worst Miss SA Ever, Marilyn Ramos ( I heard that “Marilyn Who?” you just made) explained her side of the story & let us know why we never saw her anywhere… Shem, it’s a bit of a sad story.

First, here is what Heat said:

Don’t you just love how people take random comments on Twitter and call that “public opinion” as if they represent the majority’s views …

Anyway, Marily responded to the Heat attack with a press statement … :
“First and foremost, I want to emphasize that I absolutely loved my year as Miss South Africa. It was an honor and privilege to serve as my country’s ambassador on so many levels. I executed my duties and responsibilities as Miss SA with integrity and to the best of my abilities, and with the resources I was given. So when a well-known South African magazine published some derogatory comments recently, I felt it to be an ill-informed and personal attack on me as a person. It shocked and saddened me, and with the encouragement of those people close to me, I decided it was time to share my side of the story.

Don’t get me wrong, even though I wouldn’t change anything from the year of me wearing the crown, I would be lying if I said everything came easy. More often than not, I was presented with some major obstacles that I had to overcome all by myself. Because of these obstacles people are still asking questions like ‘why were you so rarely seen in the media and public eye?’; ‘Is it true that you were more than often unavailable telephonically?‘ and ‘What exactly happened at Miss World and Miss Universe?’ Well, here are the facts:

The reason I was almost never seen in the media and literally ‘invisible’ is plain and simple: There was no PR in place for Miss SA 2012. The events, charities and other initiatives I had done went unseen to the public. No one was sending out Press Releases of my doings, creating the warped perception that I wasn’t fulfilling my duties as Miss SA. A PR team was only put in place when the Miss SA 2014 search started, and clearly focused on the 2014 pageant. The events I attended were a combination of what the Miss SA Offices arranged and invitations I received in my own personal capacity. But despite all this I tirelessly focused all my energy on the various charities I was responsible for.

Contrary to popular belief, as Miss South Africa I did not even have a clothing sponsor, but was always expected to look my best and that of a Miss South Africa. This dilemma reached a critical climax when it came to the Miss World (hosted in Bali) and Miss Universe (hosted in Moscow) pageants. With minimal support once again, it came down to my parents and family drives (to raise money) to pay for almost everything, including 90 outfits (gowns, national costumes etc), national gifts, contestant gifts and R23000 excess luggage, just to name a few. My family and I had only 4 weeks in between the two international competitions to prepare for Miss Universe, a time frame any industry expert will tell you is almost impossible to achieve. To make everything worse, no one from the Organization even made an effort to come see me off at OR Tambo. I did not let this hinder me.

I still went ahead and represented my country to the best of my abilities. The fact that I didn’t place at either pageant wasn’t because of anything I did or didn’t do. I tried my utmost best, poured my heart and soul into it, and firmly believe that it just wasn’t my time. I think it is also fair to mention that I was not the only Miss South Africa, that
did not place at Internationals; in fact, there were three other Miss South Africa’s that did not place in previous years. Perhaps the absence of a South African Director played a role while 99% of all
contestants had someone from the national organization present for meetings, events and the final show.

The above mentioned issues are only a few matters at hand that made my year as Miss SA more than just a challenge. Yes, there were times I didn’t answer my cell phone, all due to a strenuous schedule and the fact that I had to manage the majority of my obligations all on my own.

But enough with the negative. There will always be people that criticize your every move and second-guess the decisions you make. But the one thing they can’t fault me on is the dedication I showed towards my charities, institutions that were, and still are, so close to my heart. As Ambassador for Cotlands and World Play Day, I focused most of my energy and personal resources to make a long-term difference. Together with Mnet Cares I established a fully equipped mobile toy library (a minibus furnished with cupboards, tents and educational toys) which is now doing its rounds through rural areas.

I also worked closely with numerous other foundations including Reach for a Dream, the Sunflower Fund, Soweto Home of the Elderly, Mnet Cares Naledi Literacy Program and ‘Sue Lubbe and Friends’.

I was, and still am, the Ambassador for the Elandela Rhino Trust. As activist I assisted and worked hands on
with wounded rhinos after they were victims of a poaching attempt. I worked side by side with the world’s best rhino conservationists, doing talks at schools and pledged against poaching, this to create
awareness in the heart of the East, where rhino horn is being used. I even took it a step further by creating awareness amongst the Miss World contestants and crew. My efforts paid off when, on World Rhino Day, I was interviewed live on Sky News, this creating more awareness of rhino poaching
internationally.

Please note that everything I have just shared was not to attack any individual or organization, but rather to rectify misinformed comments aimed at me as a person and as Miss SA 2012. I want to thank each and everyone that aided and supported me on this wonderful journey. Your love has carried me through the good and the bad times, and has encouraged me to continue with various exciting projects. This is not the last you have seen of me.”

Poor girl :-(

Miss South Africa is just not what it used to be man… Now can Heat Magazine please write an article about Musa being the Worst Idol Ever so Musa can respond and tell us what happened with him?

These people are not grooming stars, they are just here to make money.

Recap: I Want To Sing Gospel

On Wednesday JC was invited to spend the day on an adventure tour with the Top Ten contestants. Oh did we have fue. We started in Fourways for some Painballing (into zomgamla) then off to Soweto ekasi we went. We had to do the Soweto Cycling Tour which turned out to be so much fun. We ended the tour at Sakhumzi for some soul food which made the sore thighs all worth it. It was a lovely day, the top ten kids are such cool kids.

Now back to business, yesterday we saw the top ten perform duets and I must say they have really pulled up their socks and I’m starting to feel the vibe. The theme for their duests was LOVE and they had to sing about God’s love.

.

First up was Anele and AndileT and their performance was just flawless. I love Andile’s voice though it sounds like I’ve heard it before. Anele is just that Ntonkozo Mbambo kind of singer, she just brings it no trying to hard nothing and judging by the number of people who say they are voting for her. She has a lot of people who just think she is great. Ntokozo was very impressed with their performance she said it was just beautiful and Makhabane also loved it. Tshepo wasn’t asked for a comment and I couldn’t help but laugh thinking of a scene at the paint balling field when the kids were chanting something about killing him singing with their guns in the air. LOL uyaba traumatiser abantwana lobhuti.

AndileV and Lusanda performed the song He Died For Me. Their performance was good. Ntokozo loved it and Tshepo was not impressed as usual.

Next up it was Sibulele and Kahludi and they sang Jesus Loves You So Much. Kahludi has the most beautiful voice shooo. I can’t even remember Sibu’s singing because my ears were fixed on Idris Elba. From what I heard from the judges Sibu lost the melody at some point but Kahludi (who is my favourite by the way) couldn’t be faulted.

Karabo and Nelisiwe were next to take the stage. They gave a nice rendition of Uthando Lukababa. Nelisiwe is also a beutiful singer and for some reason when you look at her you think she’s gonna sing like Veliswa Skeyi and when she oepens her mouth out comes Yolanda Adams. Karabo is one of those heard before kind of voices and has a tendency of trying too hard. Makhabane said something about them being overexcited and I know it wasn’t directed at Nelisiwe because she is way too calm. Tshepo said they didn’t stick to the notes.

Last but definitely the best for the night, Lynnzay and Sthembiso. They sang Uthando Lukababa Lungaka and gave it a nice vibe. Lynnzay sang some parts in Zulu while Sthembiso sang some parts in Afrikaans. It was just lovely so lovely that even Tshepo said it was a happy and exciting performance. Makhabane said something about the language switch having been a problem and Tshepo strongly disagreed.

Overall it was a great episode. I’m excited about next week. Viewer votes are now open and I think eliminations will start next week. I will be voting for my favourite Kahludi and my crush AndileT.

What do you think of the top ten? Any favourites yet?

According to the organisers, the event will reawaken your spirit to recognise the great power within you.

“The event is targeted at any person who currently feels like they are not maximising their purpose of being on earth. If you feel like the past does not suit you anymore while the future looks too far, the session is for you.” he added.

Clash Of The Choirs Episode 4 Review

After the undoubted success of the 1st season, Mzansi Magic decided to bring back Clash of The Choirs for a second season and I must say that was a great decision. I now have something to look forward to come Sunday evenings. This Sunday we saw the Choir’s 1st performances themed “Theatre Night”, TeamShugasmax  was the only team that gave me “theatre”, the other six teams focused on deliverance.

I must admit I was shocked at how TeamMoneoa, TeamShugasmakx, TeamHHP and TeamTshidi slayed. I didn’t peg them to be good masters and they proved me wrong. While my favourites (based on their musical expertise) TeamZiyon and Simphiwe disappointed me.

  • TeamSimphiwe’s (Eastern Cape) rendition of a Shugasmax song gave me mixed feelings, I loved the solos but the choir did not blend.
  • TeamRobbie (one of my favourites – KZN) did not disappoint, they were on point singing Simphiwe’s Ndi-ready…
  • TeamHHP (Free State) killed Zahara’s Loliwe but I found myself losing concentration because choir members were all over the stage.
  • I was very impressed with TeamTshidi (Limpopo), they undertook a Moneoa song.
  • A dismal fail for TeamZiyon, andiyazi la-fish bebeyenza shem abantwana baseWestern Cape.
  • Gauteng blew me off, Well done Shugasmakx!
  • I must say I didn’t have faith in Moneoa, but Yes! Her team rocked Mpumalanga!!!

I think this season is going to be an interesting one, underdogs are showing how hungry they are. They really are in it to win!

In some other Clash Of The Choirs News, if you’ve missed the show Dr Ribs was absent but she will be back next week. Was it my eyes or Bonangs make-up was not on point…or maybe its my tv-set. Anywho, no- eliminations this week so you’ll get to see all 7 teams next week on Mzansi Magic Channel 161 at 17:30.

In The Weekend News…

Happy Monday, friends of JC!! Hope the weekend was good… let’s check out what was in the news this past weekend!

The Sunday papers had more quotes from the “celebrities” involved in the thigh groping incident that took place at Sway.

First of course there was that video Euphonik uploaded on his instragram, which he lated deleted, but we heard it wasn’t the only one, he has more.

Footage: Bonang/ Khune incident from JustCuriousTV on Vimeo.

In this video, the incident looks minor isn’t worth all this noise, but according to what Bonang told Sunday World, there was more:

“His management told me that an apology was coming and begged us not to take any action. I wanted him to call me or my family or write me an e-mail or text message and say sorry because he violated me, but nothing has come forward from him since the incident. I actually wanted to press charges, but I decided to give him time to apologise for what he did because I don’t want to fight him in court, but he seems to not be showing remorse. I will meet with my team and lawyers and take it from there.”

“I was on my way to the toilet and he saw me and greeted me. When I went to the toilet the second time he touched my leg and I told him to stop. When I came out of the toilet going to my table he slid his hand into my dress and rubbed his hand against my bum. I then confronted him and told him to stop, but he simply went outside. Nobody beat him up. Themba just asked him why he did what he did and left. ”

*yawn* ... this story is so tiring…

In more interesting news…

Pearl Thusi covers May True Love Magazine and I absolutely love the cover. It’s fun, super chilled and SO Pearl, nothing pretentious about it and I think they did a great job.

In the mag she reveals that she’s writing a book for single mothers, and in it she will include a chapter by her baby daddy, Walter Mokoena. The two have since made peace and she’s cool with Walter and his new wife. Read the mag for more, you’ll love the styling.

Sunday Sun also reported that Pearl will soon be announced as the face of Neutrogena. Big things popping.

This True Love May issue is also Lerato Tshabalala’s last issue. She has resigned and hasn’t yet announced where to from here. I’m sure it’ll be interesting, the lady had me paying attention to True Love again. Much respect to her.

I’ve also been seeing tweets and things about Kabomo and True Love Man? Let us know if you have the 411.

This magazine is good for comic relief. I swear, there is always something in there to have you shaking your head and laughing. Don’t take any of these headlines seriously… just read for laughs or just to see how dry things are in celeb-gossip-land.

According to Sunday World, whatever was going on between Arthur and Chomee is over.

The paper says Chomee used to live with Arthur and now she’s moved back home… apparently one of the causes of this break up is Euphonik. lol. Ain’t this crazy.

Kuthiwa Arthur discovered text messages exchanged between the two, and remember there was that story with Euphonik’s helper telling a newspaper she doesn’t know anything about Euphonik’s missing cash, he should ask Chomee and Bonang coz they are always at his house. Or something like that…

lol I feel so silly writing about this… but anyway, whatever the problem is, I hope Chomee and Arthur will resolve their issues. Their partnership seemed to work so far… but ke nothing lasts forever, sometimes growth requires us to leave some things and people behind.

In Other news:

Isidingo has introduced a new family which is made up of Jet Novuka and Noluthando Meje… I’ll wait for them to introduce Oprah.

Ukhozi FM is said to be interested in bringing Zama Ngcobo back to the station to co-host their breakfast show with Sgqemeza

Election Time!!

With only 2 more sleeps till we vote in the national elections, who will you be voting for?

Whatever you decide… All the best!!!

In random news…

I went to see The Amazing Spiderman 2 with my son last week and oh boy did I love it! This scene here with this boy is one of the many cute moments in the film, I couldn’t stop laughing here. I found it quite fun, I think I enjoyed it more than the Original and the first Amazing Spiderman. Andrew Garfield just works in this one… Loved how I could feel his connection to Emma Stone through the screen.

If you watched, let me know your thoughts!

Happy New Week!

Thula Sindi Launches 2014/15 Range

Renowned award winning fashion designer Thula Sindi launched his Spring-Summer 2014/15 range to the press and media of South Africa on APRIL 30, 2014, upon his return from Shanghai, China, where he was the guest of honour and where he showcased to delegates at an event celebrating the 20 years of Democracy in South Africa.

This range – which can be defined as his best and most mature work yet – comprised of around 40 looks, that each fell within five title “stories” and concepts, which inspired the clothes:

***The themes and illustrations are explained below by Thula Sindi***

 “Gorgeous Grace”

Keywords: movie star – old Hollywood – elongated silhouettes – Black and White – pastel colours in ikat pattern – silk brocade – lace – neoprene

The Gorgeous Grace theme is about a classic idea of femininity through the lens of Alfred Hitchcock. This is an onscreen femme-fatale, much like Grace Kelly or Tippi Hedren. This theme is characterised by strong yet fragile but achingly stylish. There’s fine Chantilly lace, huge volumes of skirts and decadent brocades that are constructed into formidable dresses that look and feel like a million bucks.

“Wild Colour”

Keywords: – Solid Bright colour – Pink – leopard print – suede – Gold

The Wild colour theme is about exuberance and being willing to risk looking tacky or gaudy. This is inspired by the woman who is not afraid to be ferocious in leopard print or to shock in electric pink. These two risky elements are combined in light weight printed suede with touches of gold embellishments or gold zippers and the intense colour of neoprene.

“Playful Print”

Keywords: – Black and Blue – sequins -Curlicue print – Acid green

The “Playful Print” theme and story is inspired by wallpaper (the faded & jarring prints) and wall flowers (shy women who would rather blend in). With these two ideas in mind, I set out to create a story of items that specifically played on print; whether it was overpowering and fashion forward (as in the baroque curlicues skirt and cropped top), or muted (as in the printed trapeze dress in a dusty navy blue and faded central print detail). This is print at its most subtle and it’s most vibrant.

“Urban Pretty”

Keywords: – Gold – Black and White – lace – Chunky Gold Zip –

This theme is inspired by modern day fairy tale set in any busy city across the globe. We may no longer have SJP as Carry Bradshaw, but the big city girl looking for love whilst navigating her path to fulfil her career dreams is exactly what inspired ‘Urban Pretty’. The very soft and feminine juxtaposed with the brash, flashy and dark.

“African Kaleidoscope”

Keywords: – Embroidered Cotton – African inspired graphic prints – Neoprene – Classic Silhouettes

The “African Kaleidoscope” story is inspired by my need to embrace colour; I referenced the idea of the “Seven Colours” lunch many South African households cook on Sundays: how can one wear seven colours and still look uniquely African and sophisticated? The first step was to pair abstract prints that had been transferred on top of embroidered cotton (instead of the regular flat surface fabric) that give off a subtle and modern African feel and combine them with a tech and performance textile in the form of Neoprene used primarily for scuba diving wet-suits.

African Kaleidoscope is a globally-appealing and eye-catching way to bring African print and colour into your wardrobe.

African Language Radio Stations

When I was younger one of my favourite past times was listening to the radio we used to listen to Radio Lebowa back then, which later went on to become Thobela FM. If it was a good time of the month the radio would be on the whole day and somewhere towards the end of the month we would only listen to the STORY (radio soapie that used to be on) and the soccer. During these times the Eveready battery will be taken out of the radio and placed at some strategic corner to absorb the sunlight in an attempt to extend the battery’s life.

Radio was a big part of our life back then and I had imagined that when I grow up I would speak that proper Pedi and be an announcer on the radio. One of my earlier memories was listening to the soccer with my brother and I always liked how elaborate those guys were, I always got the sense that I was in the stadium, I could get the exact location of the ball and the disappointment on the coach’s face on the side of the pitch. And then there was that exciting Laduuuuuuuma when the ball reached the back of the net.

I haven’t listened to the station in a while and my relation to soccer has since dwindled. Now I listen to the Primedia stations more. Recently when I was going through the list of the MTN Radio Awards 2014 Winners I was very impressed with the representation of the African Language stations in Major categories. This is impressive for us listeners as we are now able to see our stations in commercial CIRCLES and no longer being boxed. It also means as listeners our interaction with the station is it being considered by giants such as MTN.

However these platforms are exciting to brag and enhance station’s brand relevance, what I would like to see though is some of my favourite DJ’s such Thabo “Mo Afrika” Mohlatlole endorsing big brands from automobile to financial institutions which will help in positioning their own personal brands and the station to a larger audience.

Who is your favourite dj in the African Language radio stations?

Oooh what a shock to find out that we just won an award as The Best Entertainment African Blog, out of 67 entries, we came out tops. I did not even know that someone entered us into the competition, thank you to whoever is responsible.

The winner in each category was  chosen by tracking each blog’s specific engagement, readership and then comparing that to the other blogs in the same category.

Thank you to every person who reads Just Curious, we owe this honour to you!

.

Here is information on the African Blogger Awards:

The winners of the first annual African Blogger Awards - that saw over 520 entries from 27 African countries – have been announced. The competition received entries from all corners of the continent including Nigeria, Kenya, Benin, Mali, Morocco, Togo, Cameroon, Malawi and Eritrea, to name a few, with the diversity of nationalities being a clear indication that social media influencers across Africa have welcomed the opportunity to be measured quantitatively against their peers.

The 2014 African Blogger Awards are the first true, impartial measure of the reach, resonance and relevance of an influencer channel. The awards also mark the first time that winners have been announced based on scientific metrics, rather than through peer nominations.

Marketers can now get in touch with all entrants to share branded advertorial content with these African audiences by using the competition partner, Webfluential.

Congratulations to all of the winners in the first African Blogger Awards. The next African Blogger Awards will be held in February 2015.

South Africa Joins Global #BringBackOurGirls Movement

Following the shocking abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from a boarding school in Chibok, Nigeria,  a number of protests under the banner #BringBackOurGirls have taken place worldwide to pressurize the Nigerian government and international community into prioritizing the girls’ rescue, as well as to raise awareness about the kidnapping.

Terrorist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the abductions, and in a recently released video, announced that they would be selling the girls into slavery.

On Thursday, 8th of May at 10h00, South Africa will hold a local edition of the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ rally in Johannesburg to bolster the groundswell of voices growing internationally.  The protesters will march to the Nigerian Consulate in Illovo to demand that the government of that country place more resources, attention and focus on liberating  the abducted girls.

Rally organiser actor and activist Rosie Motene comments “We’re tired of the rest of the world being silent about such an important issue. When it happened in Congo, we didn’t step up to the plate.  It’s important to understand that this isn’t just a Nigerian issue –  it’s a terrorism issue. It could happen anywhere in the world. It happened to Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan, who was shot in the head for pursuing an education, and now it’s happened in Nigeria.  It’s also important to stress that Boko Haram is a terrorist organisation, not an Islamist one – this is NOT the way of Islam.”

To date, protests have taken place in Abuja, Nigeria, Washington DC,  Houston,  New York and London , and more are being confirmed on a daily basis.  Gautengers are urged to attend Thursday’s rally in solidarity with the kidnapped schoolgirls.  Protesters are also asked to bring placards,  and wear a headwrap, or ‘Gele’ , the signature Nigerian headwrap as an identifying feature. As the World Economic Forum on Africa conference commences this week in Nigeria, we call on African leaders to commit to the effort of rescuing the girls.

The organisers call on media, private sector,  schools, civil servants, religious formations, and artists to use their networks to support the call to rescue the girls. The #SATakesAStand action is citizen activism in direct response to the Nigerian crisis, joining a global network of activists who’ve raised their voice against this atrocity.

Details of the rally as follows:

Date: Thursday, 8 May 2014

Time: 10h00 am

Venue: Convene at Sandton City Rooftop Parking (by Tiger Wheel & Tyre exit) at 10am, Sandton – Johannesburg

Action: Rally will depart Sandton City at 10h00 to the Nigerian Consulate (3km distance)

We call on Nigerian authorities to ACT!

Those girls are ours, find them, rescue them, and bring them back!
