In this second offering of the Amazing Spiderman franchise we see Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) faced with the dilemma of being Spider-man a superhero protecting the City and protecting the people he loves. The truth about his parents is revealed and he realises that he has a deeper connection with Oscorp than he thought. The main villain of the movie is Electro (Max Dillon) played by Jamie Foxx, a troubled Electrical engineer who idolises Spider-man to the point of obsession. Electro is more powerful than Spider-man which pushes him to the limit. The movie keeps you on your toes with fast paced action scenes and a bit of humour. Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) is then introduced in this instalment of the franchise and Peter loses someone dearest to him. The central theme of the movie revolves around Peter Parker finding himself and overcoming challenges.
1 The Amazing Spider-man 2
The cinematography is the first thing I want to talk about, the special effects are out of this world. The movie feels like Spiderman is holding the camera in his hands most of the times which brings you into the movie. Peter Parker is livelier more humorous in this offering he has the funniest lines. He has accepted that he is the One who has to save the city but being Spiderman puts the people around and closest to him in danger and he has to live with that.
Electro steals the movie for me just everything about his supernatural powers made me fall in love with his character. I wish I had him on speed dial especially in these times when we are plagued by Load shedding. I love the way he moves and the way he talks. In his first scene you hear small voices that are in his head which is kind of like the soundtrack to that scene. I don’t get it why is it that the Villains are always the coolest. One thing I always notice with Spiderman movies is that most of the Villains don’t start out as villains. They start out as a simple Joe from the block with their own difficulties which leads them to being villains. This makes it hard for you to hate them at the end because you know their journey and what led them there. Jamie Foxx did justice to the character even though there isn’t much acting from his part which is exactly how we love our sci-fi movies. The last fighting scene between him and Spiderman is a must see. Harry Osborn only makes an entrance in this movie but his part in the movie for me isn’t powerful but I believe we will see him in the next instalment.
Spiderman’s love for Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) is haunted by something from the past. Unlike in the previous trilogy Gwen knows that Peter Parker is Spiderman and loves him for it but as always things always get in the way of their love. They try to get away from each other but their love is too strong and brings them together. But don’t expect a fairy-tale ending.
The movie doesn’t offer much drama or romance I would say this is a guy’s movie because it’s full of action and spectacular special effects that would keep guys wanting more. Marc Webb the director did a great job even though this is the fourth movie under his belt. He did his best to balance a bit of romance and comedy without sacrificing the action.
Great action scenes for me are the anchor for the movie. Kids will love it and us the sci-fi followers. It’s worth the watch but to say that it’s Ama-zing (Debonairs pizza advert voice) would be pushing it a bit. I can’t help but always compare it to the previous trilogy with Tobey Maguire. But if you are looking for something the whole family will enjoy, this is it.
The DVD is already out in stores.
