With this adult content they’ll be bringing to your living room? Are they saving you the trouble of googling and watching it online?
I’m asking because last week ICASA (Independ Communications Authority Of South Africa) announced their decision to grant Top TV 3 Porn channels.
I don’t have a problem wiht Top TV having adult content, as long as I’m not being forced to watch it. Porn is out there already, it’s a huge industry, people are watching it, so if Top TV viewers want it, why are we infringing on their rights to watch what they want to watch…
There was a lot of noise about why ICASA would do that at a time when there are so many rapes against women and children and ICASA says that there is nothing linking porn to the rapes so they couldn’t deny TopTV this, if there isn’t research proving otherwise.
Their words:
The Authority upholds the view that there is no law of general application prohibiting the production and distribution of adult content in the Republic. Only the production and distribution of child pornography is expressly prohibited by law.
The authorisation therefore limits the broadcast of the adult content to the watershed period i.e. period from 20h00 to 05h00.
The Authority approved the application on the basis that the licensee shall ensure that programming on this channel which contains sexually explicit scenes, conduct and/or offensive language intended for adult audiences shall not be broadcast before the watershed period; and all the security measures including the double pin code as outlined in the application are in place to safeguard children’s rights.
The Authority has also considered all submissions made in respect of this application from all interested stakeholders and it was found that most of the representations made were based on moral grounds; rather than a research evidence to demonstrate some of the conclusive remarks linking pornography and gender-based violence. It is the Authority’s view that indeed there is no basis or law for the rejection of Top TV’s application.
According to a new study, conducted in the Netherlands, which surveyed 4,600 men and women between 15 and 25 about their pornography use and preferences as well as their sexual experiences:
Eighty-eight percent of the young men surveyed had seen pornography over the past year, compared to 45 percent of the women. Participants were specifically asked about ”risky” or “adventurous” sexual activities, reported HealthDay. The researchers found that only 0.3 percent to 4 percent of these risky sexual behaviors were connected to porn use.
According to NBC News, the sexual behaviors participants reported were split into three general categories: adventurous sex, partner experience and transactional sex. “Adventurous sex” included things like sleeping with someone who the person met online, “partner experience” covered number of partners and one-night stands and “transactional sex” was anything that involved payment. Watching porn more was associated with engaging in these behaviors, but only slightly so.
